This is an expanded version of a talk I gave at the then Nottingham Polytechnic. I set out to give a general account of scientism in the human sciences, including Taylorism, Fordism, systems theory, group relations and the general use of the categories of science to convert the relations between people into the relations between things (reification). It appeared in a special issue on Post-Fordism - Science as Culture - No. 8: 118-43, 1990.
