'Is Nature a Labour Process' 83k.
This is a paper given at a conference at Sussex University in the early 1980s. Its
title is ironic. I had been given so much flak for saying that science is a labour
process, I thought it would be a useful exercise to go the whole hog and ask if nature is,
as well. I hope my path to arriving at a negative answer helps to illuminate the labour
process perspective on science, technology, medicine and other sorts of expertise. I tried
to include in it all my favourite quotes from the marxist classics which bear on these
issues. It was published in L. Levidow and R. M. Young, eds. Science, Technology and
the Labour Process: Marxist Studies, Vol. 2. London: Free Association Books, 1985, pp.
206-32.
