'Human Nature, Psychotherapy and the Law: Issues of Violence
and Racism' 95K
I was asked to give a talk to the Law School of the University of
Manitoba. Drawing on my earlier writings, I set out to draw attention to the primitive and
perverse processes at work in sexual abuse, violence and racism. I did some research on
the statistics of psychiatric morbidity in prisons and related matters. The implication of
my argument is that unless we move from a punitive to a therapeutic approach, things will
continue to get worse. I cite evidence that such people can be helped by therapy and
therapeutic communities and that the younger they are helped, the better their prospects
of not reoffending. The talk was delivered on 13 January 1999.
