Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy |

Robert M. Young Online Writings'Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy: The Grand Leading the Bland' 83k This is my fourth set of reflections on the relations between professional organizations purporting to represent psychotherapy in Britain, the broadly-based and democratic United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and the elitist British Confederation of Psychotherapists, dominated by the British Psycho-Analytical Society. I concentrate here on the dialectic of self-esteem and self-limitation which I believe the structural relations between the analysts and the psychotherapists involves. There are also some remarks on the American situation, where the analysts not affiliated with the International Psychoanalytic Association have been more robust and active on their own behalves. A truncated version of this paper was given to the Annual Conference of the Universities Psychotherapy Association on 'Power and Influence in Psychotherapy', London, 15 November 1997. |
