'Braverman's Labour and Monopoly Capital: The
Degradation of Work in the Twentieth Century' 50k.
This is an essay review of a book which had a huge impact on the
radical science movement in the 1970s and 1980s. It provided a labour process
perspective on science, technology and medicine and set off a whole train of
thinking about expertise in Marxist terms. Although primarily expository in
style, this essay can be seen as the origin of the labour process way of
thinking which was fundamental to the work of the Radical Science Journal
Collective. I cannot claim that it had much impact in the history, philosophy
and social studies of science more broadly, but it deeply influenced those of us
who wanted to integrate the objective, subjective and social aspects of
expertise in a single mode of analysis. This essay was published in - Radical
Science Journal - No. 4: 81-93, 1974.
